With the arrival of Sri Pat Guest House, Soi 7 is no longer solely the bastion of dirt-cheap hovels. This spiffy 'guestel' is a cross-between a guesthouse and hotel, ideal for the flash packer generation traveling with more money than time.
It's the little things that distinguish Sri Pat from the more numerous run-of-the-mill places along Soi 7, historically Chiang Mai's counterpart to Bangkok's Th Khao San. Moving from the uncluttered lobby to the sedate, celadon-tiled hallways, you know you've stumbled onto a good find. Room interiors don't disappoint, as can often be the case when budget places dress up the public areas only to neglect the rooms. Matte-finished wood graces the doors, windows and furniture, making a refreshing change from the high-gloss poly more commonly seen in Thai guesthouses. Staff are kind and helpful and will make you feel like a tycoon of industry instead of a disoriented tourist.
